[Kuroko's Basketball] Kise Ryota's Guide to Staying Safe

Kise Ryota's Guide to Finding Shelter

Rule One: When the flashes and screams start to suffocate you, run.

Rule Two: Keep running until you hear the twang of a bowstring.

Rule Three: Say thank you to the girl who says, “Oh... You're still here?”

Kise Ryota, Kaijo High's star, a member of the Generation of Miracles, a model and a basketball ace. His life is filled with cameras, cheers, victories, and the endless act of playing a part. Until one evening, in yet another suffocating moment when a frenzied crowd swallows him up, he follows his most primal impulse: he runs.

He runs to the old school building in the deepest part of campus, to a silent bamboo grove, to a place even his most unhinged followers wouldn't dare approach: the archery club.

There, he meets Shimizu Maki.

A girl who, after he perfectly imitates Aomine's moves, only asks, “Does that make you happier, or just more like someone else?”

A girl who calmly points out that “the corners of your mouth dip 0.3 seconds lower than usual when you fake a smile” when he puts on his professional smile after a game.

A girl who, when he doubts himself after a defeat, simply hands him a mandarin and says, “But the sea breeze feels nice right now.”

She's immune to the aura of “Kise Ryota.” All she sees is a tall classmate who's been running too hard and is out of breath.

For Kise, the archery range becomes the only “illegal shelter” in his crazy career as an idol. And to Maki, this tall boy who keeps showing up at strange hours with tired eyes is just an ordinary person who needs to be reminded to “remember to breathe properly.”

This is a story about “being seen.”

How a genius admired by countless people clumsily learns to be an ordinary person, in the eyes of a girl who never looks up to him.

And how that girl, with the focus and calm of an archer, gives his turbulent, dazzling world a quiet point to orient itself around.

“You don't have to become anyone else's shadow.”

“Because to me, you've always just been Kise Ryota.”
