An Unconventional American Gold Seeker [1980s]

A cryptographer transmigrates to New York in 1979.

She becomes Sylvan Woods, chasing her dream of making it in Hollywood.

America's "Age of Greed" is about to begin.

But from the start, she is saddled with five thousand dollars in medical bills.

Paying them off by acting?

No.

Her first fortune begins with taking advantage of a famous director.

She hand-builds a mechanical device at zero cost, solving the problem of creating split-screen effects while shooting on film.

One day, as Sylvan assembles equipment, she listens to a radio adaptation of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

A knock comes at her rental home's door. It's her new roommate.

The newcomer is also named Sherlock Holmes, a college student who has just taken a leave of absence.

--

Sherlock was preparing to retire and keep bees.

Then he woke up as a nineteen-year-old college student with the same name.

He saw a world unlike anything he knew.

The familiar Victorian era of the nineteenth century was long gone.

The unfamiliar age of microcomputers in the twentieth century was just around the corner.

And Arthur Conan Doyle's The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes made him wonder whether he was a fictional character or a real person.

Sherlock: First, let's solve one small problem. Where can I buy delicious honey?

In a nutshell:

A transmigrated powerhouse and a detective from another era meet in 1980s America, where "greed is good."

["Greed is good" comes from the 1987 classic film Wall Street.

The original line:

The point is, ladies and gentlemen, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good.

It later became shorthand for 1980s American yuppie culture and financial mania.

At the time, America championed free markets, deregulation, the pursuit of enormous wealth, and "winner takes all."]
