The Village Flower Becomes the Brigade Leader in the Seventies

Hulugou in the 1970s was so poor you could hear the wind whistling through it.

The brigade leader fell ill, and for a while no one in the village was willing to take over the mess.

When He Manyue, the youngest daughter of the He family, woke up, she found a "Leader-Only System" in her head. If she refused to become brigade leader, the System would take her life!

He Manyue: "What are you waiting for? I'll be the brigade leader!"

The whole village erupted. What could sweet, delicate Manyue possibly do? Lead everyone into starving in the cold?

But once He Manyue took office, she had everyone organized down to the last detail, from the eighty-year-old women to the three-year-olds playing in the mud, even the dogs at the village entrance!

And so, everything took a turn:

The local layabouts were made to raise pigs and became expert pig farmers.

The sharp-tongued women formed a women's federation and became unbeatable in a fight.

Even the big yellow dog at the village entrance was trained as a patrol dog, ready to bite anyone who slacked off!

No one ever imagined that this poor, remote village would later become a nationally renowned "Model Village," "Top Scholars' Village," and "Village of the Wealthiest."

Years later:

The nation's richest man said tearfully in an interview, "Without Captain He, I'd still be playing in the mud."

An academic from one of the two national academies said, "Captain He taught me the basics of math with a fire poker in the snow."

An Olympic champion said, "Captain He told me to run faster or she'd let the dog bite me. That's how I got good."
