Lin Shubai, a renowned tutor to young women in Jiangnan, is hired by the wife of the Suzhou prefect to teach her blind eldest daughter, Lou Yuewan.
An accident took Lou Yuewan's sight and her glamorous life. Since then, she has never left home and spends night after night sitting alone until dawn.
When they first meet, Lou Yuewan nearly pokes Lin Shubai in the eye. The second time, she knocks Lin Shubai down and leaves her head bleeding. The third time, she straddles her and acts like she owns the place.
