On the way down, a sudden downpour forced him to take shelter beneath a tree. Then a little golden monkey fell from the sky, straight into His Majesty's arms. Everyone around him was horrified! His attendants were so frantic that they were about to draw their swords and kill the monkey on the spot!

At the critical moment, the First Emperor looked down and met the little monkey's eyes. A tiny, excited voice instantly rang clearly in his ears:

[Waaah! Mommy! I've made it! I actually met Qin Shi Huang! His Majesty the First Emperor! Warm! Alive! Tall! Handsome!!!]

The First Emperor's phoenix eyes twitched, and he was stunned. "!???" [Had the little monkey in his arms become a spirit, or had he himself gained supernatural powers after finishing the ceremony?]

At Zhangtai Palace, the emperor had to review a mountain of bamboo slips every day, so I worked hard to "fish up" papermaking and printing for him. By happy accident, I helped bring the imperial examination system into being more than eight hundred years ahead of schedule, solving the dangerous predicament of the Qin army having no wars to fight after unifying the realm and the system of military merit ranks teetering on the brink of collapse!

On the eastern coast, the swindler Xu Fu talked nonstop, trying to con the First Emperor into believing he could attain immortality. He planned to take a great ship and lead a group of boys and girls overseas in search of immortal mountains. I squealed and charged at him, beating him up! I fiercely protected His Majesty's enormous retirement fund!

The Yue people grew brazen and repeatedly invaded the borders of Chu. Furious, His Majesty wanted to send troops south to attack the Baiyue. I immediately "fished up" antidote pills for miasma and an accurate map of Baiyue for him. The emperor was so delighted that he kept stroking my fluffy monkey head.

Much later...

His Majesty's confession:

"In the twenty-eighth year of my reign, a celestial monkey fell into my arms atop Mount Tai. From the moment I heard the little monkey's thoughts, I could continuously obtain wondrous things to strengthen the nation and enrich the people from the divine monkey: secret manuals for papermaking, sacred texts on printing, the art of gunpowder... potatoes, corn, sweet potatoes... saddles, stirrups, horseshoes... After that, the realm I had painstakingly forced together grew ever more stable, and the Qin Empire's power developed and improved rapidly. Everything went smoothly, and I smiled every day. Yet there were only three things that troubled me:

"First, whenever we encountered the able minister Zhao Gao, the little monkey would squeal in its heart: [Your Majesty! A traitor! A great traitor! Kill him! Hurry up and kill him!]

"Second, whenever the little monkey saw my youngest son Hu Hai, it would leap excitedly on my knee: [Your Majesty! Your Majesty! The corrupt Second Emperor of Qin! He'll bring the Qin to ruin in three years! He'll make the empire perish after only two generations! Kill him! Hurry up and kill him!]

"These two things left me utterly horrified!!!

"And yet neither was what troubled me most. What troubled me most of all was this:

"The little monkey immediately! At once! Without the slightest hesitation! lies in my arms, kicks out its legs, stiffens its body, and closes its eyes to pretend to be dead!

"Sigh, Zhao Gao is manageable, and Hu Hai is manageable, but the matter of immortality truly keeps me awake at night. It troubles me endlessly!"
