After years of careful planning, Yu Chisu finally succeeded in helping the new emperor ascend the throne.
As the emperor's teacher for many years, Yu Chisu had thought he could finally enjoy a quiet life. He never expected his imperial student to commit such an outrageous act and want to marry him as his empress.
After Yu Chisu rejected him again and again and sternly rebuked him, the new emperor flew into a rage and spoke without thinking. He threatened to arrange a marriage between Yu Chisu and the great general Duan Zhuhan, who had just returned disabled. If Yu Chisu would not be his empress, then he could become a cripple's husband instead.
Yu Chisu decided that being married off to Duan Zhuhan was clearly easier to accept than becoming his student's husband. So he readily agreed to the arrangement.
To the new emperor's fury and the court officials' utter astonishment, Yu Chisu married the newly returned great general, Duan Zhuhan.
On their wedding night, Duan Zhuhan, whose legs were supposedly disabled, looked at him coolly. "I never thought His Majesty and the Imperial Tutor valued me so highly. To keep an eye on me, the Imperial Tutor has sacrificed so much, marrying a cripple and becoming his husband."
Yu Chisu couldn't be bothered to explain. As he undid his wedding robe, he replied, "Then you'd better behave yourself, General Duan."
Watching Yu Chisu fall asleep at ease, Duan Zhuhan couldn't help placing a hand on his neck.
The next day, word spread that the Imperial Tutor had nearly been strangled to death by the great general on their very first night as a married couple.
Imperial Tutor Yu Chisu was brilliant and breathtaking, with the bearing and looks of an immortal. Yet after serving his purpose, he had been cast aside and forced into a humiliating marriage as a man's husband. And the man he'd married was the notoriously violent General Duan Zhuhan, who was now disabled and said to be even more twisted than before. Everyone sighed in sympathy, convinced that the frail Imperial Tutor wouldn't survive a year by General Duan's side.
Duan Zhuhan sneered. He had also thought Yu Chisu was just a weak scholar, the sort who would die after a couple of coughs... if Yu Chisu hadn't nearly stabbed him to death on their wedding night.
People only knew that General Duan had tried to strangle the Imperial Tutor on their wedding night. They didn't know that the moment Duan Zhuhan put his hand on Yu Chisu's neck, before he could even apply pressure, Yu Chisu had swiftly stabbed him.
When people sympathized with Yu Chisu over the marks on his neck, which he had made himself, General Duan was busy stopping the bleeding and treating his very real injury...
Duan Zhuhan ground his teeth. "The Imperial Tutor excels at both letters and arms, and knows when to bend and when to stand firm. I, Duan, am impressed."
Yu Chisu smiled faintly. "I also know a little medicine. Since your legs aren't actually disabled, should I help you cripple them so your act will be flawless?"
Duan Zhuhan choked, then teased him. "...Wife, are you reminding your perfectly healthy husband that he owes you a proper wedding night?"
Yu Chisu: "..."
