Before starting university, Mai Chaoying set three small goals for herself: win the national scholarship, publish an article in a core journal, and have a romantic relationship.
Halfway through her four years, she had easily accomplished the first two.
As for a romantic relationship... she did have someone in mind.
Chen Jianxing, the famous and popular senior from the graduate school next door, was handsome, fit, and smart. He looked like the perfect person to get to know on a deeper level.
Unfortunately, she heard he was devoted to research and kept all women at a distance.
Mai Chaoying's romantic dreams were dashed, and her progress remained at zero.
An extreme J-type like her would never allow a plan to fall through.
Just as she was growing anxious, her roommate shared a video.
The video said: Single people should visit temples more often. If you see someone you like in the Hall of Marriage, just run right into them and ask for their WeChat. They'll think Buddha has arranged a fated match for them, so they definitely won't turn you down.
The effect is even more explosive if you add the classic line, "I feel like we've met somewhere before."
With the task her roommate had given her, "Don't come back until your arm is bruised purple," Mai Chaoying wandered around the temple all day.
She steeled herself, took a step, then backed away...
No, this was just too awkward.
I'm going to fail, she thought.
As she turned away in disappointment, she unexpectedly bumped into someone's arms.
Remembering her unfinished mission, Mai Chaoying squeezed her eyes shut and steeled herself. She decided to go along with it and use that tired opening line. "I, I..."
She looked up at the familiar yet unfamiliar face.
She couldn't get the rest of the words out.
The person she had fantasized about dating gazed at her with a smile in his eyes and said...
"Have we met somewhere before?"
