* A gentle, crafty southern girl vs. a seemingly flirtatious, sharp-tongued young man
[Fake rented-room romance / Love grows over time / Little rabbit and big bad wolf / Healing]
To escape an arranged marriage imposed by her family, Cheng Shiyuan heads north to find work.
Thinking she's found a great deal, she rents a luxurious basement apartment.
Then she discovers the agent swindled her and she has rented the same room as a handsome guy.
Yu Yi comes out of his room bleary-eyed and leans against the doorway, looking Cheng Shiyuan up and down with disdain.
"Your money is only enough to rent my bathroom."
Seeing the poor girl with nowhere else to go, Yu Yi has an uncharacteristic moment of kindness.
"Fine, you can stay in that little room. We'll call it sharing the rent. Pay me every month."
Cheng Shiyuan is so moved that tears well up in her eyes. That very night, she cooks Yu Yi a whole table of delicious food.
The timid girl, who looks like a hamster, successfully wins her way into his heart through his stomach.
But Cheng Shiyuan is too soft-spoken and always talks in a tiny voice.
Most of the time, Yu Yi still finds her annoying.
Cheng Shiyuan is a wonderful roommate, very considerate. She doesn't complain even when Yu Yi plays the guitar in the middle of the night.
She sees Yu Yi date many women, hold no steady job, and run around taking bit parts and modeling gigs.
Cheng Shiyuan gets along pretty well with his various girlfriends, and his exes often ask her about Yu Yi, unable to get over him.
Ex-girlfriend: "He doesn't even touch me, not even a kiss. When I go to his place, he just dumps a computer on me and tells me to play games or watch shows. What does that even mean?"
Cheng Shiyuan, feeling guilty: "Maybe... he just wants someone to keep him company."
A scene from one night suddenly comes to mind.
Yu Yi comes home drunk and grabs Cheng Shiyuan, refusing to let her leave.
So she has no choice but to sit by his side with the light on and keep him company all night.
She thinks that might be why Yu Yi asked her to stay in the first place.
