Ruby is a gem hunter.
Her Nen ability is unusual. It's called [Invisible Chains], and it lets her link herself to another person so that they experience the same pain and injuries.
But it comes with many restrictions, so she rarely uses it, to keep enemies from figuring it out in advance.
While searching for a legendary gem, she unexpectedly ran into the Phantom Troupe. Before she could retreat, she was spotted by Phinks, the fifth member.
To protect herself, she had no choice but to link herself to Phinks. At least that would keep her alive.
Her plan was simple: once she reached a safe distance, she would sever their link.
But the Phantom Troupe didn't seem to accept her suggestion, and forcibly kept her in the group.
What's more, she always felt that the leader, a guy named Chrollo, looked at her strangely, as if he had ulterior motives.
Well, if she could link one person, she could link two. To stop this guy from pulling anything, why not link him too!
Chrollo was very cautious, but one moment of carelessness was all it took for him to fall into her trap.
Ruby finally felt a little more at ease. Now that their leader's life was tied to hers, he surely couldn't secretly hurt her, right?
As time passed, the number of people linked together gradually increased, and the amount of Nen required grew larger and larger.
Just as Ruby was considering severing a few chains, she discovered that the others didn't seem to want them removed at all. They were looking at her more and more strangely, too.
Also, there had been a lot of discord within the Troupe lately, with violent fights breaking out all the time.
But that probably had nothing to do with her, right?
