Marriage first, love later / enemies-to-lovers / childhood friends
A sweet little romance
Short-tempered and easily annoyed x sharp-tongued, proud, cold-faced flirt
Blurb:
Chen Mingyin is spoiled and rude, and she loves to lose her temper. When she's in a bad mood, she'll even scold a dog she passes on the street.
No one on Wutong Street dares to cross her.
Her neighbor, the young General Cui, is different. Handsome and dashing, brimming with confidence, he draws endless praise just by standing there.
Though he always wears a cold expression, even the neighborhood folk aren't all that afraid of him.
Outsiders all think the two childhood friends are a perfect match.
Only Cui Changling knows the truth.
Every time Chen Mingyin looks at him with a beaming smile,
she's actually so annoyed with him she could scream.
On her fifteenth birthday, Chen Mingyin kneels before the Buddha.
She counts on her fingers and prays, "Please grant me a husband who'll make all my wishes come true."
"I hope he's powerful and influential, richer than a kingdom, gentle as water, gracious and refined, extraordinary in bearing, knowledgeable about the heavens and the earth, and widely read..."
She rambles on and on, then adds one last thing.
"And it would be even better if he were a top scholar named Pei."
Cui Changling leans lazily against the wall and scoffs.
"Keep dreaming."
Chen Mingyin doesn't even look at him. She clasps her hands and murmurs her prayer.
"Please take a good look at that person outside."
"I curse him to get caught in the rain without an umbrella, and to have no paper when he goes to the privy..."
"Are you done? Let's go."
As Cui Changling urges her on, Chen Mingyin finishes with a vicious final curse.
"May he step in dog poop every time he goes out!"
Chen Mingyin thinks Cui Changling is nothing but an annoying pest to her.
One day, they'll go their separate ways and never see each other again.
Until one day, she wakes up in his bed.
And becomes his widow.
