When she was seventeen, the bitter winter wind howled, and pain seeped through the bones in Zai Shui's legs.
So when relatives came demanding money, all she could do was pale and wheel herself backward.
"Sell the house if you want, but let's be clear: I'm not taking care of this kid."
"You won't? Then neither will I."
"Let whoever wants to take care of her do it!"
The argument made her ears ring.
Then a thunderous knock suddenly sounded at the door, and the relatives looked at one another.
The older boy from across the hall, a neighbor she barely knew, strode in.
Disheveled hair brushed across his fierce brows and eyes. A cigarette dangled from his lips, and when he lowered his brows to look at them, the oppressive air around him made everyone break into a cold sweat. He carried a jacket in one hand, muscles taut and veins winding along his arm. A long red mark beneath his rolled-up sleeve was still bleeding.
Without wasting words, Yu Jiahe walked over to Zai Shui, draped the jacket he was carrying over her legs, and tucked his cigarette into its pocket.
He didn't even glance at the group behind him. His cool voice brimmed with menace. "She's my responsibility."
"As for the rest of you, get out!"
Yu Jiahe picked Zai Shui up with one arm. "Come with me."
The jacket covered Zai Shui's legs, and his injured arm rested lightly around her shoulders.
The girl in his arms silently shed tears, then managed to squeeze in a sentence between everything else. "Don't smoke."
Yu Jiahe was, as always, stubborn and cold.
"Don't tell me what to do."
A moment later, he spoke again, his voice softening as if to coax her.
"I didn't smoke. You can throw it away."
When Zai Shui was twenty-two, Yu Jiahe had made a name for himself. A renowned director in high demand in the entertainment industry, he was fawned over everywhere he went.
But in countless entertainment reports, Zai Shui was only his disabled younger sister, a burden on his life. They said it was only a matter of time before Yu Jiahe abandoned her.
Then rumors about the internationally renowned director ran rampant for a while. People said wedding bells were soon to ring and that he was about to get engaged to an actress from the industry. The rumors were so detailed they sounded real.
The actress was one of Yu Jiahe's few friends in the industry, and they were about to work together for the fourth time.
That day, when Zai Shui got home, Yu Jiahe smiled and pulled out a chair for her. "Come here. I've got some happy news to tell you."
Zai Shui stopped in her tracks.
[Brother, if you can get what you want,
then it's okay if you leave me behind.]
