"His sword can kill and save. Then he stirred up a storm of snow, and sent it blowing into my heart."
As the daughter of a low-ranking concubine in the household of the prefect of Cangzhou, Qi Yue learned from childhood to live carefully, afraid of offending anyone in the household.
That winter, Cangzhou was bitterly cold and buried under heavy snow. The head wife of the household forced Qi Yue's gravely ill mother to kneel in the snow and wouldn't let her get up. By the time Qi Yue arrived, all she saw was her mother's cold, lifeless body in the snow.
In the vast snowfall, the household servants pinned Qi Yue down and dragged her toward the Cangzhou military camp.
One of them threw her into the filthy frozen earth of the camp and said coldly, "It's your good fortune to serve the soldiers, Sixth Miss. Take it well."
In the filthy snow, Qi Yue stood in her thin clothes, watching a pack of leering soldiers lunge at her and tear at her clothes.
She shut her eyes in despair, but the pain she'd expected never came. Only warm blood splattered across her face.
She met an assassin.
That day, he assassinated an officer, plunging the military camp into chaos. Qi Yue escaped amid the confusion, only to run into the assassin after his mask was pulled off.
She saw his face, cold as ice, with a scar running from his brow to the corner of his mouth.
To stay alive, she clung to the assassin and pretended they were an ordinary married couple from the streets, hiding from the soldiers hunting them.
He was always cold and harsh with her.
Yet he would frown as he carefully treated her wounds, make her hot porridge every morning, and buy her thick winter clothes.
Whenever he came home covered in blood and wounds, he would shut himself in a room, unwilling to see her.
Later, while they were lost in one another beneath a heavy snowfall, he brushed his cheek against the crown of her head and softly said, "My name is Xijing."
"I'm a famous assassin in the martial world. There are tens of thousands of people who want me dead."
Qi Yue merely pressed her face against his warm, strong chest and spoke in a clingy voice.
"Xijing, I want to marry you."
1. Both characters are virgins, one-on-one romance.
2. Not a wish-fulfillment story. It has heartbreaking moments.
Content warning: The story follows the conventions of its historical setting and may contain feudal dross, but the heroine will not be abused. Please use your own judgment before reading!
