Gu, Want a Canary?

Shen Duoduo is the youngest child in a blended family. His father dotes most on him and the child he had with his late first love, while his mother loves him most along with the child she had with her late childhood sweetheart.

They love him, but he's not the one they love most.

Five-year-old Shen Duoduo watched as his parents finally settled down in the city. They planned to take his older siblings with them and leave him, the child they had together, behind in the countryside. Tears pattered down his cheeks. As he cried, he hugged his teddy bear, sat on the threshold, and fell asleep.

Then he had a dream.

In the dream, he had grown up, but life had not become wonderful, as Grandma had told him it would when he was older. His family all seemed unhappy. He was unhappy too.

Then someone locked him up. It was a mansion like a castle, with a huge table full of delicious food, a room full of beautiful clothes, and a cold-faced man in a wheelchair. But Shen Duoduo knew the man was a very good person, because he was handing grown-up Shen Duoduo stack after stack of money. Shen Duoduo's eyes lit up.

"As long as you behave and stay by my side, Gu Zhili, and be a good little canary, all this money is yours. I'll make sure you have good food and drink for the rest of your life, and give you half of everything I own. Isn't that good enough?"

Five-year-old Shen Duoduo: "Yes, yes, yes!"

After waking up, five-year-old Shen Duoduo thought it over, grabbed his little backpack, and hid in his parents' suitcase. He would go tell Gu Zhili in advance that he agreed! He was willing to be a little bird!
