Ten years after Yu Wanbai died, she crawled out of the river.
She looked at her body, still warm to the touch, and her empty pockets, and fell into deep thought.
A torrential rain began to fall. Cold and hungry, she thought of Si Mingqing, the childhood friend she'd grown up with.
At a public phone booth, Yu Wanbai nervously dialed the number.
The call connected, but the other end was strangely quiet. There was only an odd dripping sound, sticky and wet.
"Sorry, I got the wrong number!"
Yu Wanbai's mind went blank. She hurriedly hung up, regretting her impulsive decision. Who would believe that a dead person had come back to life?
Fortunately, a kind Taoist priest took her in, and her basic needs were taken care of.
She quickly forgot about the brief phone call. Right now, she cared about only one thing.
The Taoist said that returning to the mortal world after death defied the will of heaven, and that he would send her on to reincarnation.
On a restless night, someone knocked at her door.
Yu Wanbai stared blankly at the bodyguards lining both sides of the corridor, and at the young man in a wheelchair, looking quietly at her.
The gentle, handsome eyes she remembered were unfocused. His frame had the mature, upright bearing of a grown man, but his expression was cold, utterly different from the boy she'd known ten years ago.
Behind him, the Taoist priest was being pinned to the floor by the bodyguards.
He reached out to Yu Wanbai. The visible part of his wrist was wrapped in thick bandages, and his tone allowed no refusal.
"Wanwan, come home with me."
After he began using a wheelchair, he grew to hate everything around him even more.
Countless failures had taught him that the vibrant girl in his memories would never return. She had left him forever.
One stormy night, he sat alone in a pitch-black room, feeling his blood drain away. In his daze, he seemed to see the figure he'd longed for over so many years.
But the sudden ring of the phone jolted him out of his near-death hallucination.
"Sorry, I got the wrong number!"
The call was hurriedly cut off, and he suddenly began to laugh.
Tears mixed with bright red blood slid down his pale cheeks, one drop at a time, landing on the cold screen.
How could it have been the wrong number?
He'd only ever given that number to one person. The phone had stayed silent for ten years.
The person he'd longed for all these years had appeared just as he watched death approach, his eyes cold and unseeing.
It doesn't matter if he can't see.
He'll find her, no matter the cost.
Even if he has to crawl, he'll crawl to her side.
He'll make sure she can never leave again.
He swore it.
