In 1988, Liao Chuchu lost her parents. She spent three days on a train to find her fiance and marry him.
When she arrived, she learned they belonged to different worlds.
He came from a distinguished family, while she had no family left; he was a university graduate, while she had only finished middle school; he was an excellent military doctor, while she couldn't do anything.
He said he would help her study and find a job, and let her stay at his home for now...
He could help her with anything, except marrying her.
Cold treatment, wariness, and living under someone else's roof: Liao Chuchu thought she could endure it for the sake of her future.
But she had misjudged herself.
On her third day there, at a banquet, his cousin introduced her to a group of eligible young men and women. They all smiled at her with unmistakable contempt.
"Chuchu? What a pathetic name."
"Why not just give her some money and send her off? Why keep her in the house?"
"Family background, education, perspective... and genes. A mother's genes affect her children, don't they? No one here would marry an illiterate country girl."
For the first time, Liao Chuchu discovered she had a talent for making a scene and saying vicious things.
She surveyed all the men there with a sharp, animal-appraising gaze, then smiled. "I get it. It's just like breeding livestock. The better the stock, the easier it is to produce healthy offspring."
.
Liao Chuchu left.
She waited tables, dealt with the most difficult customers, and set up a stall where the crowds were thickest. She did whatever it took to survive!
That's when she discovered she wasn't gentle and obedient. She was fierce, bold, and full of tricks... Living on her own wasn't hard at all!
Later, she opened shops and factories and grew fabulously wealthy. Her accomplishments far surpassed those of the young men who had once looked down on her.
She came to have a different answer to the judgment they'd passed on her name.
She's not pitifully delicate. She's extraordinary.
