Vampire Short Stories

After half a month of rain, the bridge leading to the capital was washed away. Lelisse, who had planned to attend a society ball there, had no choice but to stay for a while at the castle of her high-born distant cousin.

In the castle, where her cousin had grown somewhat unfamiliar to her, Lelisse met his new friend, Leon, an earl from a neighboring country.

He was an excessively charming man, with a vast fortune and a pair of deep green eyes like whirlpools.

Whenever Lelisse met his gaze, she felt as though he might devour her.

Leon fascinated Lelisse, but he also made her feel unsafe. A man of such high nobility would be so difficult to win over sincerely. By comparison, her cousin, whose temper had changed somewhat since they were children, seemed like the better choice for a husband.

Lelisse's heart wavered.

But neither her cousin nor Leon pressed her for an answer.

They watched her, and at times, their expressions were startlingly alike.

The rain kept falling. Her cousin grew stranger and stranger, rumors of man-eating beasts spread around the castle, and the servants who had spoken with Lelisse began to disappear one after another. Panic gripped the castle.

Then, on a rainy night, Lelisse finally mustered the courage to escape.

A year later, Lelisse, having narrowly escaped death, returned to the capital. At a society ball, she met a gentleman, and within six months they had fallen in love, gotten engaged, and married.

On their wedding night, while Lelisse was removing her makeup, her husband came in and embraced her from behind. He nipped her earlobe and laughed. "So this is your type, Lelisse?"

Lelisse looked up in horror and saw in the mirror her husband's face wearing Leon's smile, a smile that should have died with him.
