Yue Lanzhu was abducted by a System run by human traffickers. She dutifully played the wicked female supporting character, setting the broken storylines back on course so she could return to her own world. As long as she followed the plot and did everything she could to make life difficult for the male and female leads, then brought them together at the story's finale, her mission would be complete.
But many endings for wicked supporting characters like her were horrific. Some were given to servants as rewards, some were forced into prostitution for the army, and some became beggars who starved to death in the street. Yue Lanzhu didn't want to do this anymore. Why should she have to suffer? She could change the original storyline into a complete mess, avoid suffering herself, and still complete her mission. As long as the male and female leads ended up together, who cared how it happened? Then she could retire with her mission accomplished.
Yue Lanzhu had already completed missions in four worlds: a prince, a general, a cool-headed powerful official, and a father and son who were both emperors. This was her final world. Her husband, Lin Zheng, was a poor young scholar who would become the top scorer in the imperial examinations within a year, a destined hero who would marry a commandery princess first and fall in love with her later, have three children, become the emperor's most trusted official, and reach the pinnacle of his life.
For now, he was just a poor scholar with no money. All Yue Lanzhu had to do was cheat on him before his exam, break his heart, divorce him, and then, after he married, play the role of his former wife, his pale moonlight, who had fallen into prostitution with nowhere else to turn. The mission was easier than any she'd faced before. Once she completed it, she could go home. After hurting Lin Zheng and watching him suffer so terribly that he wanted to die with her, Yue Lanzhu let out a sigh of relief. At last, she could leave.
She found a place to live in seclusion. One ordinary morning, she heard a knock at the door. Yawning, she asked her maid to open it, only to see an incredibly familiar face: handsome as a straight bamboo stalk, cool and aloof, a man of peerless beauty.
Yue Lanzhu was so terrified she nearly screamed. "Shen, Shen Mengshang, why is it you?"
This warm, refined gentleman, peerless as a flower atop a mountain, walked toward her step by step. Now he looked like a vengeful ghost, vicious and sinister. His gaze swept over her as though he meant to chew her up and swallow her whole. "Zhuer, I've finally found you. We will never be apart again."
He was the husband she'd won over in her first world.
She remembered clearly. In that first world, she was a cousin staying with the family. She used underhanded methods to drug Shen Mengshang, forcing him to marry her. To break him and the female lead apart, she stopped at nothing. When her true nature was exposed, she took an arrow for him and died in his arms. Before she died, she clutched his hand and said, "Cousin... I've brought you and Miss Lian together. I hope you two will be happy. We were married for three years. Did you ever... love me?" But before he could say that he never had, Yue Lanzhu breathed her last.
In the second world, she was the wicked female supporting character in an older-man-younger-wife romance, the crown prince's pale moonlight and former crown princess. His father, the emperor, had forcibly taken her into the palace and made her the favored imperial consort. Her interference in court affairs led to the crown prince's death. Emperor Li Jinyan finally came to his senses, had her executed, married the female lead, and had children of his own. The emperor and empress lived in love for the rest of their lives.
So why weren't these people living happily ever after with the female lead? Why had they all come looking for her, demanding things from her, claiming her, even trying to imprison her?
Looking past Shen Mengshang, she saw Ming Weitang, the father-and-son duo Li Zuo and Li Chuo, and her husband in this world, Lin Zheng. She was so frightened she collapsed to the ground...
"Where is she?"
"She's still here. She can't escape."
"Why does she never learn? We need to teach her a lesson."
The male lead turns evil; the ex-wife-chasing crematorium trope. The female lead has no heart and loves no one.
