[Mischievous, Trouble-Making Birdie x Cold and Ruthless Yet Secretly Tender Emperor]
Xianyun was the only little bird in all the lands within ten thousand miles to have colorful feathers, and he had been adored by everyone since childhood.
Then he accidentally fell down a mountain, reverted to his original form, and was captured.
Those people roughly tied long peacock feathers to his tail, then stuck extravagant fake feathers to his eyelashes.
Later, locked inside a golden cage draped in black cloth, he heard people outside say they were going to present him to the emperor.
So, on the jade steps before the solemn palace hall, Xianyun and his cage were presented to the emperor.
The moment the black cloth was lifted, he heard a minister announce loudly, "Your Majesty, this is the true phoenix I found. It is truly an auspicious sign from Heaven!"
Xianyun: o.O
A phoenix? Me?
The next moment, the gaze of the Son of Heaven fell on him, chilling him to the bone.
The twelve strings of beads on the imperial crown swayed as he heard the man give a soft snort.
"Hmph. I've never seen such a plump phoenix."
Xianyun: "Chirp!"
Your whole family is plump =_=
-
And so Xianyun was installed in the emperor's study.
But he had no intention of being kept in a cage. He wanted to go home! To be a carefree little colorful bird!
So he brazenly bit up memorials, pecked through pen shafts, and even climbed onto the emperor's head to make a nest out of the Son of Heaven's hair.
That wasn't all. He plucked off his fake feathers, stood proudly on the imperial desk, and spread his wings at the emperor. "Chirp!"
Look! I'm not a phoenix! Hurry up and throw me away!
The man glanced at him and flicked the bird away.
Xianyun rolled around on the desk a few times, furious. He suddenly pecked the emperor several times, drawing blood with every bite, then leisurely strutted off.
At last, the troublesome little bird crossed Chu Jie's line. The emperor ordered his people to toss him, cage and all, into a side hall and leave him to fend for himself.
But that night, as thunder boomed and rain lashed down, Xianyun was so frightened that he broke through the cage door and flew back to the bedchamber, clamping his beak around a lock of Chu Jie's hair and refusing to let go.
Chu Jie had had enough. He reached out to pull the deranged little thing down...
And touched warm skin.
The hair was released, and a clear young voice came from behind him. "I finally turned back into a human!"
Chu Jie froze, then slowly turned around.
Moonlight streamed through the window lattice. A naked young man sat excitedly on the dragon bed.
After meeting Chu Jie's eyes, he snatched up the covers and pulled them over himself.
The emperor was uncharacteristically silent.
-
Chu Jie had seized the throne with the blood of his closest kin on his hands, using ruthless methods to cow the court.
He had been emperor for barely three months, yet had personally killed countless ministers. Everyone in the palace lived in fear.
And now, a fearless minister had actually dared to present him with a fake phoenix.
Just as everyone expected the minister to suffer a terrible fate, and the innocent chubby bird to end up in a pot of soup...
Someone witnessed the Son of Heaven feeding grapes to the fake phoenix with his own hands!
And letting it hop around on his dragon bed!
Not only that, the emperor's hands were always bruised, clearly bitten by that little bird's iron beak!
Yet even so, he brought the bird to court in his arms!
Most shocking of all, when the bird gave Chu Jie its most beautiful purple feather, the cold-blooded emperor spent a fortune commissioning a craftsman to turn it into a pendant, which he wore close to his body day and night.
The ministers: ...You could've just said you liked birds :)
-
The gloomy emperor grew gentler with each passing day, and would occasionally let a fleeting smile slip. The ministers breathed a quiet sigh of relief.
But then the little bird fell ill. Its colorful feathers lost their luster, its chirps grew weak, and it could no longer turn into a human.
For the first time, the emperor, who always had everything under control, felt frantic with worry. He ordered every imperial physician to take turns treating the bird, and even summoned a shaman to pray for it, but nothing helped.
Then one night, Chu Jie opened the bedchamber door and saw a huge lump beneath the blankets on the bed.
He held his breath and approached slowly.
Then a fluffy head poked out.
After finally struggling back into human form, Xianyun was so aggrieved that his eyes turned red. He stumbled over his words as he accused Chu Jie:
"You accepted the feather I gave you, so why won't you lay an egg for me?"
Chu Jie: "..."
The hall fell completely silent.
#But I really can't lay eggs! w(゚Д゚)w#
[Reading Guide]:
* Mpreg. The little bird lays the egg.
* No political intrigue at all. The author knows next to nothing about history, and any political maneuvering is only there to move the plot along, so don't overthink it.
* Lots of creative liberties. The protagonist's bird form combines traits from many kinds of birds: giving feathers to court a mate and lay eggs, colorful plumage, a very noisy call, and so on. He's not based on just one species.
* Both are virgins, and the gong has no harem.
