Halfway through the palace banquet, the Crown Prince uses changing clothes as an excuse to step outside for some air.
Mist and rain drift through the air. Someone stands in the waterside pavilion, drenched and miserable.
The palace attendants say she is Wen Sui, wife of the newly appointed top scholar. She should have had a life of splendor, but the scholar has someone else in his heart. He abandoned his new wife for the woman he loves, leaving her alone in the pavilion, hiding her face as she weeps.
How pitiful.
The Crown Prince sneers.
He has someone bring her an oil-paper umbrella.
-
Wen Sui is the daughter of the Crown Prince's tutor. She has been weak-willed since childhood. After her wedding, she diligently served her in-laws for half a year, only to receive one remark from her husband: "Old-fashioned and boring."
She knows her personality isn't likable, and she knows her husband loves someone else.
But Wen Sui has no other choice.
Since childhood, she has studied the Virtues and Admonitions for Women, learning the Three Obediences and Four Virtues: before marriage, obey your father; after marriage, obey your husband; after his death, obey your son.
At that palace banquet, her husband suspected she had harmed the woman he loved. In a fit of anger, he shoved her out into the rain and left.
At her most wretched moment, someone brought her an oil-paper umbrella.
Wen Sui thought she had met a kind soul.
Only later did she learn that he was the one with a Buddha's face and a beast's heart.
At another palace banquet.
Heavy rain pours down as the newly appointed top scholar kneels before the Eastern Palace gates, shivering from the cold.
Inside the hall, the hibiscus curtains are warm, and the storm has passed.
The Crown Prince looks gentle as he asks, though he already knows the answer: "...Sui Sui, shall I let him come in out of the rain?"
Wen Sui holds her slightly rounded belly and sobs, unable to speak.
