Xiao Muyan is a bride-to-be offered up as a sacrifice.
From the moment he transmigrated as an embryo and was born, his family's mission for him was to become the bride of the ghost they worshipped.
His wishes meant nothing to his family. Xiao Muyan felt like a bird in a cage, dressed in comfortable, precious clothes and kept in a splendid house.
But there was nothing he could do to change things. Under constant guard, he could only live out his dull, monotonous days.
He waited for his coming-of-age ceremony. When it arrived, it would mean he was grown and ready to be offered up.
At last, the day of his coming-of-age ceremony arrived.
Powerless to resist, Xiao Muyan could only let the servants do as they pleased. There was nothing he could do.
They painted his lips with rouge, giving them a tempting sheen.
He wore a spotless white wedding robe. Its elaborate, extravagant layers felt heavy and terribly uncomfortable, but he had no choice but to accept it.
Once he was ready, they carried him into a bright red sedan chair. As everyone watched, he left the place where he had lived for more than a decade and encountered the outside world for the first time.
They dumped him, sedan chair and all, in front of a gloomy mansion.
All was silent around him. He waited in the sedan chair for a long time. When he finally couldn't bear it and stepped outside, it felt as though he were the only person left in the world.
He stared at the wooden door splattered with blood.
Xiao Muyan took a deep breath, overcame his fear, and knocked on the ancient mansion that had lain silent for twenty years.
The wooden door slowly swung open.
He stepped inside.
Beneath the eaves, the awakened ghost watched him.
A shadow about two meters tall, with long arms and legs and a pure white, faceless head that seemed unnervingly twisted.
It had no eyes, yet Xiao Muyan felt that it was looking right at him.
Fear of the unknown welled up inside Xiao Muyan, and his body trembled uncontrollably.
His courage crumbled under his fear. Perhaps he had already given up and just wanted it all to be over.
Xiao Muyan forced himself to approach the shadow and murmured, "M-Mr. Ghost."
When the shadow reached out to him, he thought it was going to kill him and shut his eyes despite himself.
But the ghost did not kill him. Instead, it carried him into a clean room. He rested against the ghost's cold shoulder and opened his eyes, confused by what was happening.
The ghost gently laid him on the bed. It seemed to understand how fragile humans were, so it was exceptionally careful.
Then a hollow voice sounded beside his ear.
"Zheng Yi."
Xiao Muyan repeated, puzzled, "Zheng Yi?"
The ghost said, "It's Zheng Yi."
Xiao Muyan seemed to understand what it meant. "You're Zheng Yi?"
The ghost said, "It's Zheng Yi."
Its voice rose slightly, as if Xiao Muyan had answered correctly and it was pleased.
