Luo Yiche's carefully cultivated image fell apart in his third month studying abroad.
His fake-young-master identity had been exposed and his bank account emptied, but he still took pictures of the library ceiling with captions about the endless night, mooched drinks at bars, and posted photos of his date's Porsche to his social media.
When someone caught him carrying plates at a Chinese restaurant, he dusted off his shirt. "Get your hands dirty. It's a family motto."
At least he'd lost the family fortune, not his surname. Family scandals stayed behind closed doors, and for now, nobody was calling him out.
His stroke of luck came in the form of Xie Wenjing.
The mixed-race rich kid showed up with a smile as sunny as Southern California and asked Luo Yiche to tutor him. Flashing a full set of white teeth and speaking broken Chinese, he said he really liked Asians' "learning ethic," because it made for a good academic atmosphere.
Luo Yiche put on a serious face, corrected the discriminatory phrasing in his sentence, then immediately accepted the job.
The eldest son of an old-money finance family, with a gambling license in Vegas. The kind of guy who had a famous singer perform at his family casino to pay off a debt.
He called it tutoring, but it was practically a sugar-daddy arrangement.
There were endless parties and all sorts of socialites. The guy was also into extreme sports and flew all over the world in his own plane.
While busy collecting his pay, Luo Yiche kept his social media updated and still insisted righteously, "I can't neglect my studies. I can't keep skipping class."
The mixed-race guy smiled. "Going to parties is part of my education, too."
Luo Yiche corrected him without a trace of shame. "I'm the one who has to go to class."
The mixed-race guy blinked his blue eyes, transferred the money, and shrugged as he said sorry, looking completely harmless and innocent.
Until one day, Luo Yiche saw the guy at an underground racetrack, ramming a modified Hummer through the guardrail. He jumped out, pinned someone to the ground, and beat him viciously. Blood streaked his sculpted, chiseled face, and he was smiling through it.
So much for the clueless foreigner.

Xie Wenjing was a classic hollow man. Beneath his flawless exterior was a heart as boringly empty as could be, belonging to a thrill-seeking monster with an energy black hole inside him.
Until he noticed a certain Instagram bourgeois influencer carrying plates with his eyes downcast after a frat party.
It didn't take long for him to dig up Luo Yiche's background: behind on rent, mooching drinks and party access, wiping tables at a Chinese restaurant... and still posting carefully angled photos of luxury cars to his social media.
His hands trembled from carrying plates, but he still remembered to brush the dust off his cuffs.
What a poser.
Clumsy and miserable, yet somehow... so vividly alive.
Like a weed pushing against a boulder, struggling inch by inch through the cracks in search of light.
At first, it was just for fun. Watching Luo Yiche's profile tense among the clinking glasses, feeling the taut line of his waist during a skydive, observing how the little wildcat tried to pass himself off as respectable: the thrill and pleasure Luo Yiche gave Xie Wenjing were every bit as great as jumping from ten thousand meters up.
Just when Xie Wenjing thought he was Luo Yiche's only sugar daddy, he discovered that the recommendation letter from a top mainstream media outlet came from an upperclassman in a media dynasty; the beautiful young man's former crush, the moonlight he could never reach, had come knocking with a business plan; and even Xie Wenjing's usually arrogant stepbrother had sent him an offer for an internship in Congress. His gaze lingered on Luo Yiche's slender neck. "My younger brother is a bit of a playboy... and not exactly mature... Why not consider me instead?"
Watching Luo Yiche flutter among them like a butterfly, Xie Wenjing suddenly realized that he had never been the only one.
He thought he was the only one taming Luo Yiche, but he had already become one of the bidders.
That night, he stormed into Luo Yiche's apartment, still wearing the dried bloodstains from an underground fight club.
The beautiful young man was packing. When he looked up, his eyes were red at the corners with fear, but he still stood straight. "Our deal is over."
"A deal?" Xie Wenjing shoved him against the wall, his hot breath brushing the back of Luo Yiche's ear. "What can they give you? Money? A future?" His fingertip traced the open collar of Luo Yiche's shirt. "I can give you all of that, and I'm much harder to deal with than any of them."
Luo Yiche turned his head away from his breath. "My family won't allow..."
"Didn't your family stop caring whether you lived or died ages ago?" Xie Wenjing suddenly bit the tip of his ear, his diction crisp and clear. "Little wildcat."
The vibrant rainforest completely devoured the barrenness in his heart. He thought he'd found a new and interesting toy, only to realize he was no longer a mere observer. The weed had become his light, and he had turned into a moth.
But moths chase the light and burn themselves to ashes. Better to claim it for himself in the most direct, most savage way.
