If their relationship were a perfume:
The top notes would be acacia and geranium. When they first met, she was his roommate's girlfriend.
The heart notes would be carnation and daylily. When he saw her again, she was the lover of his father, a widower of ten years who had no use for sex, while he was the "stepson" peeping through a crack in the door.
The base notes would be tequila and yellow roses. He brought down his scumbag father, who had cheated and caused his mother's death, and avenged her against the ex-boyfriend who had betrayed her.
When the scent faded, he took her place.
