The Days I Was Pen Pals with an Ancient General

[October Launch]

Xu Minglan unexpectedly obtains an ancient pinewood box dating back a thousand years. Inside is a note that reads:

"The northern barbarians have captured Shanhai Pass. I want to go to the battlefield."

As an archaeological researcher, Minglan is used to seeing ancient artifacts. Exhausted after days of work, she casually writes on a piece of blank paper:

"The institute is making us work overtime today. I want a day off."

Then she tosses it into the box, thinking of it as a way to vent to someone from the past.

But when she finishes working overtime and comes out, she finds a few more words have appeared on her note:

"Who are you?"

Only later does she learn that the pinewood box belonged to Huo Xuechuan, a great general of the Hui Dynasty who lived over a thousand years ago.

Huo Xuechuan led a campaign to Langjuxu twice and once made a name for himself by defeating thirty thousand enemy cavalry with just five thousand soldiers.

The people of Jizhou still remember how, on that day, the young general in black armor rose from a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood. He was their savior.

But the Hui Dynasty is a dynasty that has never appeared in the history books.

All Minglan can do is piece together his life, bit by bit, from the artifacts unearthed in the modern day.

She tells him, "The latest archaeological findings suggest you'll disappear on the battlefield, your whereabouts unknown..."

Disappearing on the battlefield can only mean being buried beneath the yellow sands, your loyal bones left behind.

He replies, "It doesn't matter. I will not fail my country."

Later, as the archaeological work draws to a close, his epitaph is unearthed in plain sight: "I have no regrets in this life, except that a thousand years from now, I will have failed the one who tends my grave."
