Haisheng, an orphan on a remote sea island, finds a badly injured boy on the beach and takes him home.
She cares for him like a wounded little animal, giving him the only soft bed and the expensive pork she could never bring herself to buy. She scrimps on food so he can get better as quickly as possible.
The boy is spoiled and picky. He complains that the bed is hard and the food is rough, always saying, "Hey, treat me better. I'll pay you plenty."
The villagers laugh at her for being foolish enough to feed a penniless freeloader, but Haisheng knows only that he's the first person to smile at her and stand up for her.
