Milo's Beach Farm

[Western Fantasy Survival, Coastal Foraging, and Farming]

Milo was having the worst luck. The ship he was on was capsized by a giant wave amid the siren's song, and he was washed ashore on an unnamed island, clinging to a piece of driftwood.

The good news: he was alive.

The bad news: he was the only survivor. How was he supposed to survive on this deserted island?

After shivering all night on the rocks by the beach, Milo got lucky the next morning and salvaged a pile of luggage that had washed ashore.

Waiting for rescue was clearly out of the question, so he could only gather the useful supplies and start clearing land to farm.

On day one, he cut timber and palm leaves to build a temporary shelter. It collapsed in the middle of the night.

On day two, he dug beneath a pile of dead leaves and found a spring. He drank his fill.

On day three, the food ran out. He wove a fishing net from hemp rope and caught a mermaid. In the end, he still got a hearty meal.

Day 268 of settling the island.

Milo opened the door of his little wooden house to greet the first rays of morning sunshine. The shell wind chimes outside rang out brightly. Crops grew lush in the garden behind the house, and the mermaid, now with a pair of legs, walked toward him, dragging a swordfish.

"Milo, breakfast," the mermaid said without expression.

"Good morning, Ossian," Milo replied with a smile.

He took the still-warm eggs from the chicken coop, then made breakfast with the fish and cabbage from the garden. He and Ossian ate until they were full.

Milo kissed the mermaid's cold face, hefted his hoe, and headed out to the fields.

Ah, another beautiful day was beginning.
