From the age of three, Chu You's life came with an extra background noise: the inner radio of his next-door neighbor and childhood friend, Dong Yanci, broadcasting around the clock.
As a baby: "Hungry, hungry, hungry..." (on endless repeat)
In elementary school: "He looked at me five times today! A historic breakthrough!" (excited voice cracking)
In middle school: "I stole his homework notebook! He chased me! Totally worth it!" (triumphant declaration)
In high school: "He has dimples when he smiles... Am I a freak?" (self-doubt)
Chu You: Thanks for asking. I'm here, and my ears are already deaf.
He unilaterally put Dong Yanci on "special attention (muted)," took detours to avoid him, kept conversations short, and did his best to minimize the noise pollution.
Dong Yanci had no idea what he had done wrong.
All he could do was bring out his lifelong repertoire: help sweep the classroom when Chu You was on cleaning duty, secretly bring him medicine when he was sick, and be the first to stand up for him when someone picked on him
all while internally freaking out: "Was I too fierce just now? Will he think I'm violent? But I couldn't help it. How dare they say anything bad about him!"
Then, one rainy night, Chu You heard Dong Yanci think:
"If I could just be a little quieter, would he stop avoiding me?"
The voice was so soft, as if afraid of disturbing something.
Chu You suddenly realized that over the years, Dong Yanci's inner voice had grown noisier, while he himself had grown quieter.
He remembered that Chu You hated scallions, helped him organize his mistakes, and silently handed him a cup of warm milk when he stayed up late.
Then he would quietly add in his mind: "Don't overwork yourself."
Later, Dong Yanci asked him with red-rimmed eyes, "Am I really that noisy?"
Looking at the childhood friend who had annoyed him for seventeen years, but also held him in his heart for seventeen years, Chu You finally sighed.
"Yes. You're unbearably noisy."
"So your punishment is to spend all the time we have from now on..."
"Slowly telling me everything."
