Sunny, upbeat novelist heroine x cool, fiercely protective shopkeeper hero
"I exchanged souls with an actress, only to discover she'd killed someone."
To experience life as an actress for her novel, Wang Jingyao walked into the Persona Convenience Store.
The Persona Convenience Store sold, exchanged, and shaped personas.
"Boss, one custom milk tea, thirty percent sugar, light on the ice." This was the store's password.
"What kind of persona would you like to buy?" The shopkeeper, Lin Ze, brought over a cup of terrible milk tea.
"An actress."
"All right." Lin Ze flipped through his persona notebook. "We can arrange an exchange if we find a suitable customer."
...But that actress had killed someone.
To avoid danger, Wang Jingyao accepted a job as a clerk at the convenience store.
She exchanged personas with all kinds of people, but danger followed her like a shadow:
An influencer with binge-eating disorder,
A middle-school girl being bullied,
A little black cat that loved to shake its head,
A lovesick woman who secretly frequented a back-alley workshop...
"As long as you stay at the Persona Convenience Store, I'll protect you."
"Thank you for protecting me. I'll do my best to protect all of you, too."
-
Wang Jingyao was used to being free and never worried about having nowhere to stay the next day. But without realizing it, she'd come to think of the convenience store as home.
"Do you think we'll run into danger?" She rubbed her arms and looked at him.
Lin Ze calmly replied, "It's all right. I'll protect you."
"How will you protect me?"
"How about moving into the Persona Convenience Store?"
"Huh?"
"On one condition: I get to run the store." Lin Ze curled his lips into a smile.
"You'd trust me to help you sell personas?"
"Yes. Why wouldn't I?" He nodded without hesitation.
Having a place to live couldn't be a bad thing.
Besides... she didn't dislike him.
-
Lin Ze kept his promise. He was that meticulous of a perfectionist.
He rescued her from a rooftop as she fell;
He carried her through a downpour, away from a cliff;
He helped her get her body and soul back...
"Lin Ze, hurry! There's less than a minute left." Wang Jingyao watched the time on the machine tick down.
"I have to make sure every parameter is correct. Just a moment."
Fifty seconds, forty-nine, forty-eight...
"All right, the parameters are fine. Let me check your safety gear one more time."
Wang Jingyao shook her head furiously.
"Stop checking and hurry up, Lin Ze!"
"No. We have to make sure every part of this is safe. It's important."
Thirty seconds, twenty-nine...
"Isn't your safety important, too?"
Lin Ze switched on the power and adjusted the settings.
Ten seconds, nine, eight...
Wang Jingyao was so anxious she was about to cry. If he didn't climb into the machine soon, she'd tear off the safety gear and jump out with him.
Lin Ze was still Lin Ze. With only five seconds left, he leaped into the machine.
With a hum, Wang Jingyao opened her eyes again.
She was in another room now. It was so dark she couldn't make out anything around her.
"Lin Ze..." she called softly, her voice anxious.
"Yeah, I'm here."
-
Perhaps they had met before, when they were little...
But Wang Jingyao couldn't remember.
She and he had skipped class.
In her memory, she vaguely felt he wasn't the type to skip class.
They stopped in front of the bicycle shed. The boy wheeled his bike out, and she sat on the back.
"Where are we going?"
"We're going to..." His voice was lost in the wind, impossible to make out.
The glow of the setting sun fell across their cheeks. It wasn't dazzling, just warm and gentle.
It was a familiar yet unfamiliar hometown, full of shifting light and shadows.
"I opened the convenience store because I was looking for someone," Lin Ze said.
Who was that person? It was strange. Why did she want so badly to know?
He grasped her wrist and looked into her eyes.
"Jingyao, I've been looking for you."

Both leads are sexually inexperienced. The male and female leads were childhood friends who reunite after a long separation. This is a long, deeply heartfelt story of mutual salvation.
