Lin Miao wakes up in an unfamiliar new world of the future. In a foreign country where she doesn't speak the language, she is fortunate enough to be adopted by a kind old man and settle into a quiet little village in the countryside. Under the assumed name Janina, Lin Miao learns the local language and gets to know this world. She discovers that its culture is much like the Far West she remembers, and that her homeland may well exist somewhere in this world. Perhaps one day, she can return home. With hopes for the future, Lin Miao does her best to adapt to country life. Quiet, peaceful days pass one after another. But she never expected a world engulfed in war to come crashing into her life so suddenly! The village isn't on the front lines, but the nearest city has become the largest military garrison for the allied forces. As the situation spirals further out of control, someone knocks on the door of the cottage on the outskirts. “Routine search.” A sharply dressed officer smiles from the doorway. Fortunately, the officers and soldiers searching the house don't seem intent on causing trouble. They finish and prepare to leave, but the lead officer suddenly stops when he passes Lin Miao. His gaze, not exactly discreet, lingers on her face for several seconds. His blue eyes sit deep in the shadows beneath his brow. “Are you single, miss?” The tall officer in a dark uniform bends toward her, casting a heavy shadow. The soldiers behind him are holding guns. This is definitely not flirting. Lin Miao sees him reach out a hand, inviting her. “My lovely lady, I have a job that would suit you perfectly.” Lin Miao looks up at him. “What if I'm already engaged?” His expression barely changes. He smiles and says: “Then please break off your engagement as soon as possible.” Reader's Guide 1. For ease of reading, characters are given names that are easy to tell apart and remember. Just keep track of who's who. 2. The setting is fictional and has no connection to reality. Please don't read it as an allegory for real life. 3. The male leads are mostly bad people and antagonists. They won't get happy endings or be redeemed. 4. The story features a series of one-on-one relationships. 5. The heroine is a victim. If you ask whether she loves them, the answer is no. 6. This isn't a passionate love story or a power fantasy about a strong heroine. Read with caution. 7. The author revises obsessively and will explain what has been changed in the chapter summaries. 8.
