A Dream of Green Mountains

[A short, free, classical-style fairy tale about a romance between two men]

A tree spirit on Green Mountain fell in love with a handsome young gentleman with a face like a peach blossom.

The young gentleman often went boating at the foot of Green Mountain, sipping wine as he sang, carefree and at ease, as if the world held not a single worry.

The tree spirit liked the happy young gentleman. He would always hide behind the mountain mist and gaze quietly at the little boat gliding across the lake. The tree spirit wanted to speak to him, but didn't know how to begin. He was a little afraid, afraid the young gentleman wouldn't like him.

The lake encouraged him: The young gentleman is kind and adorable. Don't be afraid, don't be afraid.

The birds encouraged him: You're a good tree spirit too. Go on, go on.

Even the lofty Green Mountain encouraged him: Go, go. A mortal's life is so short. Don't leave yourself with regrets.

At last, the tree spirit worked up the courage to meet the young gentleman properly. He took on human form and put on mortal clothes. He left the mists of Green Mountain and walked to the lakeshore, where the waves shimmered.

"Hello."

"...Hello."

"The song you sing... I really like it."
