Duan Qinghe figured that the most absurd thing that had ever happened to him was getting handed a bottle of glowing blue nutrient solution right after analyzing an extradimensional larva's attack delay in an anomalous realm.
Lu Yi, the former soldier who handed him the drink, was ridiculously cool when he hacked a monster apart with his metal sword, but almost absurdly meticulous when wiping the blood off it. Like right now, carefully polishing the blade with the hem of his shirt until it gleamed, while reminding him, "Don't overdraw your mental energy. We'll need you to pick apart the rules of the traps later."
From being trapped at the start by an extradimensional larva blocking the door, to breaking into the Initializer Ruins full of mechanisms midway through, to thwarting Administrator Mo's scheme in the end: he had stolen the realm's core and turned its protective barrier into a soul-harvesting ground, hoping to feed the mother nest until it could invade reality.
Duan Qinghe's ability to analyze rules could slow down time and alter basic rules. Lu Yi's metal fusion could make swords and shields, and even block attacks. Together, from the trial of the First Heart in the sacrificial house to the final battle on the extradimensional battlefield, they always fought back to back.
"Once we've taken down the mother nest," Lu Yi said, shielding him from the swirling black mist, his metal sword glowing blue-green. "I'll take you to see the night sky in the real world. It's ten times brighter than the sky in the realm."
Duan Qinghe gripped the energy key that could break the barrier. His fingertips still tingled from analyzing the rules, but he smiled. "Sure. We can visit my mentor, too, and the teammate you've been looking for all this time."
After all, from meeting before a stone tablet in the Origin Village to standing side by side as they exposed the conspiracy, they had long since become more than comrades. They were people who would return to reality together and watch the stars for the rest of their lives.
