Teaching at a Marquis's Estate Where Everyone Gets a Bad Ending

Chen Panxi served as a lady-in-waiting to the empress for ten years. At twenty-five, she left the palace. She had no desire to follow her family's arrangements and become the second wife of an elderly Hanlin scholar, so she found herself a job as a tutor for the young ladies of the Pingyang Marquis Estate.

The four young ladies of the estate were as fresh and lovely as green onions. Their days were supposed to be peaceful and pleasant, spent reading, practicing calligraphy, enjoying tea, and blending incense.

But then Chen Panxi began to dream. In her dreams, not one of the four girls met a happy end.

The gentle eldest daughter secretly pledged herself to a scholar, only for him to abandon her after placing third in the palace examinations.

The dazzling second daughter rescued a young man who had been assaulted, only to have him cling to her until her reputation was ruined and her marriage prospects blighted.

The sweet and innocent third daughter caught the eye of the dying old emperor. She was favored for ten days, then spent fifty years a widow.

The aloof fourth daughter married a suitable match, only to discover after the wedding that he had long loved someone else. She withered away in a loveless marriage.

What troubled her even more was that in these dreams, the four young ladies' widowed sister-in-law had the same face as her.
