In the fifteenth year of the Chongzhen reign (1642), as plague swept the land and Li Zicheng attacked Kaifeng, the Ming dynasty faced troubles both within and without. Sun Chuanting and Wu Youke each swore to fight to the death against the rebel forces and the plague.
