In 1989, the Soviet Union returned home in triumph after winning a total victory in Afghanistan. But beneath the veneer of victory lay wounds inflicted by half a century of military rivalry. Once the Soviet leadership understood the true purpose of “quiet diplomacy” and realized that no agreement with the Western bloc was ever possible, it faced a national economy on the brink of collapse and resolved to liberate Europe before all was lost.
