The History Books Say I'm a Demon Empress

On the first day Jiang Lingyao was crowned empress, a history book suddenly appeared before her eyes, visible only to her.

The first page read:

[Empress Jiang, a jealous and vicious woman who threw the court into chaos.]

[Three months after entering the palace, she slapped a favored consort.]

[One year after entering the palace, she drove the Empress Dowager to her death.]

[Emperor Jing died suddenly at thirty-seven. Empress Jiang kept his death secret and enthroned the young heir, then seized power for fifteen years.]

[Later generations called her the Great Zhao Dynasty’s Most Wicked Empress.]

Jiang Lingyao: “...”

She had just turned eighteen.

The emperor was twenty-four.

The Empress Dowager was alive and kicking in Cining Palace.

How exactly was she supposed to throw the court into chaos?

Determined not to go down in history as a villain, Jiang Lingyao decided to become virtuous and gracious from that day on, and put up with everyone who crossed her.

Then she discovered that this blasted history book could change.

When she saved a palace maid who was supposed to die, a line disappeared from the book.

When she stopped an old case from coming to harm, the book rewrote a page.

So Jiang Lingyao set her sights on the most ominous line in the book:

[Emperor Jing died suddenly at thirty-seven.]

From then on, Emperor Pei Zhaoyan realized that his empress was acting stranger and stranger.

He coughed once, and she had the imperial physicians summoned in the middle of the night.

He drank a couple extra cups of wine, and she snatched away his goblet.

He planned to go hunting, and she had his imperial horses inspected three times in advance.

One night, Pei Zhaoyan finally pinned her against the desk and asked in a low voice:

“Are you really so afraid I’ll die, Empress?”

Jiang Lingyao thought, Of course I am.

If you die, I’ll be infamous for all eternity!

But the more she tried to save him, the more she realized that the emperor seemed to be getting more and more unlucky.
