From Beijing’s Compounds to Ruling Shenzhen

Jiadai, a discharged soldier from a Beijing courtyard compound, quits his secure government job and heads south to Shenzhen with just two thousand yuan. His club gets smashed. His brothers get bullied. Someone tells him to kneel and call him Master. Jiadai stubs out his cigarette. "Nobody in Beijing ever dared make me kneel. Shenzhen's no different." The Northeastern gang submits, the Chaozhou gang kneels, and the big shots all raise their glasses to him. They call him the King of Shenzhen. But Jiadai says, "I'm just a Beijing man. I can't stand seeing my brothers get pushed around."
