Dual Snipers, Full Firepower

Chen Zizhou, a third-generation immigrant, joined the Vana Private Military Company at twenty so he could put his younger sister through medical school.

Alena, a young woman from Yekaterinburg, took the same path that year to repay her younger brother’s loans.

After five years as partners, they were the deadliest team on the battlefield: he was the shooter who pulled the trigger, and she was the eye that calculated the trajectory.

From Mariupol’s eighty-two-day siege to the ambush on the road to Siversk; from two hundred and ninety-three days amid Bakhmut’s ruins to armored clashes in the fields of Zaporizhzhia; from Avdiivka’s underground tunnel network to local defenses along the Kursk border. Four years and four months, seven battles, one hundred and eighty-seven brushes with death.

War stripped away their warmth as human beings, but welded their lives together.

The ceasefire agreement was read over the radio three times, then halted three times.

Chen Zizhou asked, “So what now?”

Alena raised her binoculars. “New lights.”

The horizon began to brighten. It was impossible to tell whether it was sunrise or the glow of another explosion.
