Chronicles of Ash and Frost

Shen Qinghan is the Daoist sect's only direct disciple, entrusted with the Jade Seal of Subjugation and the Peachwood Sword of Evil-Slaying, and honored by Daoist sects across the land.

A thousand years ago, she personally slew a red-clad vengeful ghost that had wreaked havoc among the living. Ever since, she has been plagued by nightmares, with the nagging feeling that something is wrong, yet unable to divine the answer.

A thousand years later, that figure in red stands once more amid the wind and snow.

Su Jinci was the only female general of a military family a thousand years ago. She died in battle for her country, only to be framed for treason. Her body was never found, and her vengeful spirit never passed on. For a thousand years she has wandered between the worlds of the living and the dead, waiting for that celestial master, so she can ask her one question in person: When you struck me down back then, did your conscience rest easy?

The Heavenly Dao placed a curse on them: Shen Qinghan's sword of evil-slaying is embedded with Su Jinci's resentment, while Su Jinci's spirit bears the celestial master's blood seal. Their lives are bound together; if either devours the other, they will both die.

Stranger still, whenever a grievance born of false accusations appears among the living, they are both drawn to the scene.

A white-robed celestial master and a red-clad vengeful ghost, bound together against their will, walk the mortal world.

Vengeful spirits in old mansions, evil gods in abandoned shrines, wrongfully executed palace maids, curses in ancient towns, sinister forces at court...

Shen Qinghan speaks of the Heavenly Dao's rules; Su Jinci speaks of justice in the human world.

As they solve one crisis after another side by side, they see through to each other's true nature.

Until they discover that the wrongful case from a thousand years ago was the result of the Daoist sect colluding with powerful courtiers to frame a loyal subject. The scene of Shen Qinghan killing Su Jinci was a false mandate of heaven fabricated by the Daoist sect.

The so-called righteous path was the true evil hiding in the shadows.

And back then, Shen Qinghan had clearly divined a crack in the truth, yet chose to believe in fate.

The root of the damage to her Daoist heart was not that she had killed the wrong person.

It was that she had betrayed her own judgment and submitted to authority.

Shen Qinghan casts aside the prejudice of the Daoist sects across the land and takes up her sword to protect the vengeful ghost.

In the name of a celestial master, she defies the Heavenly Dao and overturns a thousand-year-old wrongful conviction.
