Espionage 1940: Infiltrating the Heart of the Juntong

In 1940, North China lay under occupation, its land shattered and its rivers and mountains broken. When Shen Yanqing opened his eyes, he found himself a low-ranking intelligence officer at the Taiyuan station of the Military Statistics Bureau, a dead man who would be secretly executed in three days on suspicion of collaborating with the Communists. The previous “Shen Yanqing” had been a Communist agent planted inside the Military Statistics Bureau. But after a botched meeting exposed him, the entire contact network had gone dark. Now there was no handler, no radio, and no backup. All he had was a capital crime the Bureau’s counterintelligence team was about to pin on him, and an “olive branch” extended by the Japanese intelligence service. Three sides were closing in. His doom was sealed. But Shen Yanqing had something no one else in this era possessed: he had transmigrated from eighty years in the future. He knew every pivotal moment in this stretch of history, every turning point in the battles, and the fate of every important figure. He knew Fang Xiao’an, head of the Military Statistics Bureau’s Taiyuan station, would defect to Japan in three months. He knew Tsuchihara Jini, head of the Japanese intelligence service in North China, would next try to win over the Jin-Sui Army. He knew the Independent Regiment of the 386th Brigade was about to launch a surprise attack that would shake all of North China. He even knew that “Plum Blossom,” the figure everyone inside the Military Statistics Bureau revered, was actually a Japanese spy.
