I Joined the Demon Slayer Corps

Akizuki Makoto stares blankly at a mission report. He’s the logistics clerk for Unit G, which basically means organizing information on demons and records of local folklore for the swordsmen. Nobody takes him seriously. Even the newest recruit dares to mock him as “a useless loser who can only write stories.” That is, until the mission at Spider Mountain, where the swordsmen in his unit are cocooned in the Demon Mother’s threads. Their breathing techniques are useless, and their Nichirin blades can’t cut through the strands. Akizuki opens his notebook and recites a forgotten bit of folklore: “Count the crows, seven will cry. When a person sees the crow at a fork in the road, the demon’s threads will wither away.” The threads snap on cue. The System awakens: Rule Editor. Akizuki discovers that folk legends aren’t superstition; they’re the world’s underlying rules. If enough people believe in something, he can create new rules, change demons’ weaknesses, and even rewrite fated deaths. He starts building up resources and infrastructure, turning a ruined shrine into a folklore research center and forging “word spirits” from the power of belief to counter demons. Kanroji Mitsuri becomes his first believer, while Kocho Shinobu begins to suspect he’s hiding something. But the law of tragedy’s conservation is etched into his bones: every time he rewrites a death, an even crueler price comes due. Tsuyuri Kanao asks him, “Mr. Akizuki, you saved us. Why do you look even sadder than we do?” Akizuki doesn’t answer. He’s just received a warning from the System: the next intervention will trigger the fatal backlash associated with the “Butterfly” tag. And Kocho Shinobu is smiling at him.
