The Silent Executioner

The shadows of Tianjin in 1940, the shattered dreams of Nanjing in 1949: nine years of covert maneuvering conceal the story of a legend who remained silent to the very end. Li Mo wears the disguise of a mute driver for the Military Statistics Bureau, head bowed and blade concealed. Moving between corpses and intelligence, he is a tool everyone thinks they can use at will, and the sharpest nail driven into the enemy by the Chinese Communist Party’s underground: code-named “Gravedigger.” Silence is his armor, and killing his blade. He executes traitors and delivers secrets, maneuvering carefully between the Military Statistics Bureau and the Japanese army. Caught in the double bind of being mistaken for an enemy by his own side and exposed by the opposition, he nevertheless holds fast to his mission, secretly turning agents in the Archives Room of the Secret Service Bureau and prying loose the Kuomintang’s most closely guarded secrets. Ma Xiaotian’s arrogance and corruption, Su Fei’s journey from naivety to sacrifice, the underground party’s faith and betrayal, and the Kuomintang’s decay and collapse all reach their end beneath his silent gaze. When the red flag rises over the liberation of Nanjing, the “mute” who has kept silent for nine years finally speaks. The knife in his hand has long since buried the darkness and cleared a path to a new beginning. This is a tale of steadfastness in silence, and a tragic song of espionage written in faith and sacrifice.
