The Forgotten Founder of the East’s Greatest Port

At thirteen, he stood on the docks of Quanzhou for the first time. Merchant ships from every land crowded the harbor, and the red kapok blossoms burned like fire across the sky. He made a vow: I will make this port even greater. Twenty years later, he had done it. The warehouses brimmed with spices, fleets blanketed the sea, foreign merchants hailed him as their master, and the court appointed him to office. He had raised Quanzhou to the pinnacle of the world, becoming the true master of the greatest port in the East. But when the last Southern Song fleet drifted to the city, and a hundred thousand soldiers and civilians knelt, begging to be let in, he chose to shut the gates. Overnight, he went from hero to traitor. The Yuan dynasty used him, then cast him aside. The Ming dug up his tomb and nailed his name to the pillar of shame. The histories left behind only two words: "rebel traitor." Why was a man who built the world's greatest port erased so completely from history? He saved a city, but lost his own name. Open this book and enter Citong Harbor at the turn of the Song and Yuan dynasties. Witness the great achievement one man built over a lifetime, and how generation after generation deliberately erased it. This is not only his tragedy, but also the collective amnesia of a Chinese maritime civilization that turned from openness toward isolation.
