The Mo Dao Wielder

The Blade Wielder follows a near-documentary realist style, eschewing romanticized storytelling to portray weapons, battle formations, and the details of the battlefield with care, restoring the lived reality of soldiers in the prosperous Tang dynasty. Rather than deliberately glorifying heroism, the author focuses on the struggles, perseverance, and helplessness of ordinary people caught in troubled times. Through brutal scenes of war, the story reflects on the nature of war and honors the value of ordinary lives, its stark prose concealing profound compassion.

I am Li Chengyue, formerly a Mo Dao Commandant in Anxi. After the decisive Battle of Talas and the bloodshed at Tong Pass, I was gravely wounded and stranded in Heisongwa.

I once wielded a Mo Dao, striking fear into the enemy and crushing men and horses alike. Now I am trapped in a barren wasteland, with only illness, hunger, and cold for company. Yet the soul of my blade still lives. With fragments of my Mo Dao, I forge hunting knives to chop through frozen earth, carve wood into shape, and hone it into the shadow of a seven-foot blade. Every strike of the hammer is a tribute to Anxi; every cough of blood carries memories of the battlefield.

The tide of history may grind me to dust, but it cannot take the dignity and memories in my heart. In the cracks of history, I fight for my last belief. From the empire’s sharpest blade to a hoe for scraping together a living, and then an unyielding shadow of wood, the blade may be broken, but my back will not bend. As the empire’s sun sets and my own fate sinks with it, I stand with what remains of my body, bearing witness to the glory that once existed. Even if the blade ultimately cuts through me, my life as a soldier will not have been in vain.
