Escape from Myawaddy

Myawaddy, Myanmar: a dark kingdom of telecom fraud, beyond the reach of the law.

Hoping to pay off his debts and improve life for his family, thirty-year-old programmer Chen Mo is lured by an ad promising “high-paying jobs overseas” and takes the illegal route into eastern Myanmar. Instead of a technical job paying tens of thousands a month, he finds high walls, barbed wire, armed guards, and a scam compound no one is ever allowed to leave.

Forced to become a pawn in the fraud operation, he is beaten if he fails to meet his targets and faces death if he tries to escape. Here, human lives have a price tag, and the line between victim and perpetrator is razor-thin. Chen Mo witnesses the depths to which people can sink: some give in, some go mad, and some vanish without a trace.

But he refuses to accept his fate.

He secretly documents the crimes, searches for loopholes in the compound’s rules, and waits for an opportunity that may never come. Meanwhile, back in China, a reporter investigating overseas telecom fraud and a victim’s relative who has lost a loved one close in on this city of sin from different directions.

When the gunfire of the crackdown begins, Chen Mo sets out on a perilous escape with almost no chance of survival.

This is a grueling journey from the abyss toward the light, and a mirror reflecting both the darkness and the glimmers of humanity.

When lies are the only “truth,” staying alive is the bravest act of defiance.
