The Zhang Family's Daughter Comes of Age

During the Republican era, a young master surnamed Jin moved to the town of Qingpu. Young and handsome, with a job at a foreign trading company in Shanghai and a monthly salary of three or four hundred yuan, he immediately became every mother-in-law’s dream son-in-law. Mrs. Zhang had five unmarried daughters, so of course she wasn’t about to let this heaven-sent opportunity slip by. She urged her husband to pay him a visit. Mr. Zhang said he wouldn’t go, but then turned around and was the first to show up at Jin’s door. When he got home, he refused to say a word about it, leaving his wife frantic with curiosity. At a garden party, Young Master Jin was courteous and refined to everyone. The friend he brought along, Mr. Leng, was the only exception, arrogant enough to turn heads. Mr. Leng looked down on every woman there and casually remarked, “I’m not interested in young ladies who weren’t invited.” Zhang Fengtai, the Zhang family’s third daughter, happened to hear him. Fengtai wasn’t angry. She only smiled. But when Mr. Zhang heard about it, he put down his book and said something even harsher than an insult. This is a lighthearted comedy about marrying off daughters, family status, saving face, and the human heart. Mrs. Zhang is busy scheming, Mr. Zhang is busy watching the show, and each of the five daughters has her own ideas. As for Young Master Jin, who will he fall for, and who will truly fall for him? That’s something we’ll have to wait and see.
