A Painted Mask Falls into the Motor Oil

On the nights of Nanzhanbu Island, there are two names that never meet.

One is Jin Chao. Ten years ago, he moved to Thailand with his father. Once a gentle, warmhearted boy, he became a mechanic at an underground fight club, his hands slick with engine oil and his body covered in old wounds. He grits his teeth and survives at the bottom of the world.

The other is Jianzi. Heir to the Qiumen, owner of a seaside bar, and “the Mask” after dark. Born into a mafia family, he lives with a blade hanging over his head, measuring even the space between breaths.

A boxing match, a wrench, a handkerchief returned.

They should have been strangers on this island, with nothing to do with each other, until a bloodstained white shirt climbed into the old Subaru parked outside the repair shop.

One has been lying in wait in the darkness for so long that he has forgotten what pain is.

One has walked the blade’s edge for so long that he has forgotten how to stop.

The rainy season on Nanzhanbu Island is long.

Long enough for one person to learn another’s silence, long enough to turn a life debt into every afternoon spent fixing cars from here on out.

“You think I need someone to drive for me?”

“I’ll pay back the life I owe you, little by little.”

Two people crushed by fate become each other’s only unguarded accomplice in the deepest night of a foreign land.

A story about falling and being caught, about flowers blooming in the mud, never meant for anyone else to see.
