Feasting Beyond the Heavens: I Became the World’s Richest Man with a Food System

Lin Wan, a three-Michelin-starred chef, was sent to the afterlife by a bowl of egg fried rice with clumps of salt that hadn't been broken up. When she opens her eyes again, she's in a parallel world whose food culture can only be described as “just enough to stay alive.” No one here knows what wok hei is or what makes food spicy, fragrant, savory, and delicious. Hot pot is vegetables boiled in plain water and dipped in soy sauce; red-braised pork is just fatty meat boiled in soy sauce. Just as she falls into despair, she gets bound to the [God of Cuisine System]. She thought she could easily rise to the top, but it turns out the System is a bit of a rip-off System: [Quest: Make three customers cry with “Heartbreak Rice.” Note: They must cry from genuine emotion. Tears from eating spicy food don't count.] Lin Wan looks at the customer sobbing because the food is so awful. “...Does this count?” System: [...Calculating rewards. Reward halved.] Starting with a night-market stall, Lin Wan uses egg fried rice, mapo tofu, and Buddha Jumps Over the Wall to carve out a culinary empire in this food desert. She builds central kitchens, opens upscale chains, produces food variety shows, and even creates a global food-themed amusement park. When rivals launch a hostile takeover, the traditional restaurant industry unites to boycott her, and international capital circles like a hawk, Lin Wan sets a freshly cooked plate of mapo tofu before a group of business elites in suits and smiles. “A business showdown? Try this first. If you win, I'll sign.” Then one day, Lu Ziming, the usually coolheaded and calculating CEO of a business empire, drops all his airs in public just to score an extra helping of the limited-edition red-braised pork in her employee cafeteria.
