Beneath the Setting Sun

In 1958, in the Ansteel residential compound, seven boys swore brotherhood in an abandoned boiler room during a famine. A toss of the head became their signal for their “side-swept bangs,” and with the vow, “Scattered, we’re ash across the sky; together, we’re fire at sunset,” they made a promise to reunite in ten years.

In 1968, at a sent-down youth settlement in northern Shaanxi, Zhou Mu, once a boy with his whole life ahead of him, had been worn down by hardship. Now his sworn enemy had him cornered. He tossed his head in their signature gesture, side-swept bangs falling into place. A fight meant only to protect himself brought six friends, scattered for ten years, racing through the night to his aid from the border, the capital, military corps, factories, and villages.

From the industrial heartland of the Northeast to the remote mountains of the Southwest’s Third Front, from the wilderness of Beidahuang to the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, they forged ten years of youth in steel, buried it beneath rubber forests, and hid it in frozen earth. When the tide of reform and opening up began to rise, those once streetwise boys had become engineers, entrepreneurs, scholars, and grassroots officials. Yet the trust born in that boiler room remained their one unchanging compass amid turbulent times.

This is not the story of one person’s struggle, but of how a generation rebuilt amid broken lives, reunited after being scattered, and protected small acts of loyalty amid grand historical narratives. When the setting sun shines on them once more, they will finally understand: what lights the way ahead has never been the sun, but the flame that has never gone out in one another’s eyes.
