The Quagmire of Marriage

Everyone struggles through the mud of marriage.

Some manage to crawl out, only to fall into another patch of mud.

Others spend their whole lives struggling in it.

To escape the marriage her parents had arranged for her, Su Guo ran away with a blond punk. At nineteen, she got together with Deng Guangming and bore him a son and a daughter.

Su Guo had thought that escaping her parents’ arranged marriage would let her live the life she wanted, but things only got harder afterward.

She kept struggling and fighting against the mire of her marriage for the sake of the life she wanted. She refused to accept her fate. She would resist. She would fight back. She would become herself again.

But reality defeated her time and time again.

She was afraid that if she divorced, her two children would suffer with her, while their father might let a stepmother mistreat them.

She resisted again and again, only to give in again and again.

Deng Xian was Su Guo’s sister-in-law. In the prime of her youth, she too married a blond punk, Lin Haifeng.

She was braver than Su Guo. When she decided to get divorced, she took the children and left without hesitation.
