A Brief Account of the Cantonese Rebels' Invasion of Hunan

The Account of the Guangdong Rebels' Incursion into Hunan is an anonymous historical chronicle from the Qing dynasty. It is a local account from the late Qing period concerning the Taiping Rebellion and the Qing court's military campaigns against the rebels. In the title, “Guangdong rebels” mainly refers to the Taiping rebel forces, whom the Qing authorities regarded as bandits, while “incursion into Hunan” refers to the military and social events surrounding their movement from Guangdong into Hunan and their operations there during the rebellion. Arranged as a narrative of events, the book records related military affairs and offers a supplementary perspective within the historical sources of the late Qing on the Taiping army's advance into Hunan.

The book mainly presents chronological accounts of battles, troop movements, clashes between Qing forces and the Taiping army, local uprisings, and defensive efforts, along with excerpts from memorials to the throne and occasional recollections. Although the author is unnamed, the work was most likely compiled from military and government records and private accounts relating to the Qing campaigns against the rebels in Hunan and neighboring provinces. These records provide concrete details of clashes between Qing military and civil authorities and local forces, depicting the fierce fighting that followed the Taiping army's entry into Hunan and the Qing court's strategies for suppressing the rebels.

As a historical source, The Account of the Guangdong Rebels' Incursion into Hunan is a valuable supplement. It fills gaps left by the brief treatment of this period's military events in official histories and government archives, enabling researchers to gain a perspective on the conflicts, local defenses, and social impact of the Taiping Rebellion on the Hunan battlefield. For readers interested in modern Chinese history, the Taiping Rebellion, or local Hunan history, this chronicle is both a primary source on specific historical events and an important reference for understanding the complex military and political situation of late Qing society.
