Ciudad Juárez in 1998 was on the front line of Mexico's drug war, and death was everywhere. Seventeen-year-old Qiu Yingying is the daughter of a Chinese restaurant owner, living between poverty and violence. Eight years ago, her father was killed in a senseless robbery, leaving her and her mother to struggle to survive in a foreign country.
The turning point of fate occurred the day a drug lord - Esteban "Zebra" Mendoza - entered their lives. In order to repay the debt, Qiu Yingying began to work for Zebra. From simple deliveries to complex transaction negotiations, she showed amazing calmness and talent. In this dark world dominated by men, this Chinese girl gradually wins a place with her wisdom, mathematical mind and decisiveness beyond her age.
But with every step she takes, she gets further away from her father's kind teachings. Her mother hopes that she will go to college and escape from this land; drug lords see her as a malleable talent; and she herself is struggling between survival instinct and moral conscience. When a larger American drug cartel extends an olive branch and local traditional forces feel threatened, Qiu Yingying finds herself involved in a bloody game with no rules.
